Install and update Griddler
Get Griddler on Windows, macOS, or Linux, add the agents it runs, and keep it up to date.
Where: Settings→Check for updates
Griddler is one desktop app. It runs Claude Code and Codex, which you install separately. The Doctor can install everything else for you.
Download Griddler
Installers come from the Griddler build in Azure DevOps. Sign in with your River Logic account.
| You're on | Download | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Griddler-win-installer | Run Griddler Setup. |
| Windows, no install rights | Griddler-win-portable | Run Griddler.exe from any folder. |
| macOS | Griddler-mac | Open the .dmg. |
| Linux | Griddler-builds | The .AppImage. |
You only do this once: after that Griddler updates itself (see Update Griddler). What's in each version is in the release notes.
Pick the right download
| You're on | Get | Updates itself |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Griddler Setup installer (.exe). It installs for your user only and asks no questions. | Yes |
| Windows, no install rights | The portable Griddler.exe. Run it from any folder. | No. Download the new one. |
| macOS | The .dmg. | No. Install each new .dmg by hand. |
| Linux | The .AppImage. Make it executable and run it. | Yes, when the update feed has a Linux build. |
The macOS build isn't notarized. The first time, right-click Griddler in Applications and choose Open, then confirm. After that it opens normally.
Add Claude Code and Codex
Griddler needs Claude Code. Codex is optional. On Windows it also needs git, because Claude Code runs through Git Bash.
The Doctor re-runs its checks when the install finishes. To install one thing only, click ▶ Run on its row. See Doctor.
Update Griddler
On the Windows installer build and the Linux AppImage, Griddler checks for a new version at launch and every 6 hours, then downloads it in the background.
- When it's ready, an Update button appears in the top bar. Click it to restart on the new version.
- Or open Settings and click Restart & update in the header.
- Griddler never installs an update on its own, including when you quit.
Your tabs come back after the restart, and their sessions resume.
To check right now, open Settings and click Check for updates. The line next to it tells you where things stand:
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Up to date. | You have the latest version. |
| Downloading update… N% | A new version is downloading. |
| Update X ready — restart to apply. | Click Restart & update. |
| Auto-update off (portable build). | Download the new portable exe. |
| Auto-update off (no macOS update feed — install updates from the dmg). | Install the new .dmg. |
| Auto-update off (not running as an AppImage). | Run the .AppImage file itself, not an extracted copy. |
| Update failed: … | Try Check for updates again. If it keeps failing, see Troubleshooting. |
Your version number is at the top of Settings, after the word Griddler.
Limits
- Only the Windows installer build and the Linux AppImage update themselves.
- Updates are full downloads each time.
- Opening Griddler a second time brings the existing window forward. It doesn't start a second copy.
