Start or resume a session

Open Claude Code or Codex in any folder, pick the model and effort, or pick up a past conversation where you left it.

Claude CodeCodex

Where: Empty tile→+

Every pane starts from the New Terminal dialog. You choose the agent, the folder it works in, the model, and whether to start fresh or resume a session you had before.

Open the dialog

Click + in the middle of an empty tile. The tile also offers ⇢ and ⇣ to split it first, and 🌐 to open a web cell there instead; see Arrange the grid.

To get an empty tile, use the + on the right edge of the grid (Add column) or the bottom edge (Add row).

Pick what to run

FieldWhat it does
AgentClaude or Codex. An agent that isn't installed shows the install and login commands instead of starting.
ProfileWhich login the pane runs under. Only matters if you've added extra accounts; see Accounts and usage.
WhereThis machine, or one of your Griddler Agents. Shows only when you have an agent you can reach, your own or one shared with you. See Run it on an agent.
RepositoryEvery folder either agent has worked in, newest first. Browse… picks any other folder.
Model / EffortThe choices the agent offers today. The effort list changes with the model.
Session▶ Start fresh, or a past session in this folder. See below.

Click Start (Join when you picked a running session on an agent).

Set the defaults once in Settings→Panes & startup: Default agent, plus the model and effort for Claude and Codex. The dialog opens with them selected.

Resume a past session

Open Session and pick a row. Each row shows the date and the session's title. Untitled sessions show their first prompt instead.

  • Give a session a title from the pane's title box, then click 💾. It shows up under that name here and in search.
  • When you've resumed the same session several times, the newest copy is listed with (N forks) and the older copies sit under Older forks (N).
  • If the session's history is gone, the pane starts a new conversation and shows a ✗ fresh chip. Click the chip to dismiss it.

To resume a session from a different folder, or when you don't remember where it was, use Search all sessions.

Run it on an agent

Needs sign-inPreview

Set Where to one of your Griddler Agents and the session runs there instead of on this machine. It shows in your grid like any other pane, and keeps going on the agent when you close the pane or turn your computer off. Deploying an agent, sharing it and the Agents panel are on Griddler Agent.

Agents are listed by name, like jlee@agent-local. One a teammate shared with you adds · owner's · you can drive or · owner's · watch only. (no beat yet) means the agent hasn't reported in since it was deployed.

With an agent picked, the dialog changes:

FieldOn an agent
RepositoryA list of the folders checked out on the agent. Nothing to type. It starts on the repository you had picked for this machine when the agent has a checkout with that name, else on Agent home (no repo), the agent's home folder. Browse… is hidden.
ProfileTurned off. The agent uses the logins it was deployed with.
SessionNew session, or a session already running on the agent, listed as join: its name and state, like join: claude · agent · started 07:41 PM · needs you. Picking one turns Start into Join, and the session keeps the agent, model and permissions it started with.
🤝 Run this as a co-op campaignTurned off. Co-op doesn't work for agent panes yet.

On a teammate's watch-only agent you can only join a session its owner started.

Skip permission prompts

Skip permissions (dangerous) (Claude) and Bypass approvals & sandbox (Codex) start the agent without asking before each command or file edit. The pane remembers the choice.

With this on, the agent runs commands and edits files in the repository without asking. Leave it off for folders where a wrong command would hurt.

Turn it on for every new pane in Settings→Panes & startup→Bypass permissions by default (dangerous).

Other things the dialog can start

  • 🤝 Run this as a co-op campaign pairs this session with a teammate's; see Peek and co-op. It's turned off when Where is an agent.
  • New pair… in the tab row opens two Claude Code panes side by side in a new tab; see Tabs and presets.

Limits

  • Claude only lists past sessions for a folder Claude has already worked in. Anywhere else, ▶ Start fresh is the only choice.
  • Changing Model in a Codex pane's toolbar only applies to the next start. In a Claude Code pane it switches immediately.
