The game: XP, loot and your character

Your real work earns XP, gold and loot for a character you build, gear up and take into battle, or leave alone.

Where: Tab rowโ†’XP chip

Griddler has an optional role-playing game running on top of your work. Finished agent turns and busy minutes earn XP. Level-ups and merged pull requests drop loot boxes. You never have to play; if you do, the fights are on Battles and raids.

Make your character

Click โš” create character at the right of the tab row. Later the same chip shows your level; click it, or the mascot in the top bar, to open Your character.

Under Appearance, click the Species button and pick one: 61 of them in Folk, Beasts, Birds, Water, Mythic and Machines. Species are looks only. โš„ Randomize rolls one for you.

Optional: write a few words in Notes, like a green cloak or a scar over one eye. The painting adds them to your gear; it never replaces it.

Pick a Class: warrior, mage, rogue or cleric. The class sets your starting stats, which weapons drop for you, and your signature move.

Click Save character.

When you're signed in, ๐ŸŽจ Generate Character paints a portrait of your character in 15โ€“20 seconds. Signed out, it needs your own image key; see Keys with no control.

Your first finished portrait locks your class. After that you can still change the look: change it, click Save look, then ๐ŸŽจ Repaint. Changing class takes a ๐Ÿ”ฎ Rebirth token (below).

Your painting is also your mascot on the top bar and, if you turn it on, your desktop pet. It changes the moment a new painting lands. Until you have one, both show your character's doll.

Find a species, or make one up

  • Type in Search, or type your own speciesโ€ฆ to filter. Enter picks the match.
  • Anything you can name works: type it and pick the tile under Your own. It paints from your words, so ๐ŸŽจ Repaint to see it.
  • Recent keeps your last picks on this computer. Clear empties it; the ร— on a tile drops just that one.

Mix body parts

Tick Mix parts to choose a species for each of Head, Torso, Arms and Legs. The Species button then reads ๐Ÿงฌ Mixed โ–พ. Untick it and the whole body becomes the torso's species.

Let Claude describe the look

Type an idea in Notes, like "stormy sea captain", and click โœจ Describe. Your own Claude Code writes one original line in that spirit and puts it in Notes. It describes a look; it won't name an existing character, brand or real person. Then Save look and ๐ŸŽจ Repaint. It needs Claude Code installed and signed in on this computer; if it can't run, the reason shows when you hover the button.

See what your work earns

A guild quest you're part of completes๐Ÿ“ฆ a legendary box.
  • Claude Code turns count once the precise task signals are on; see Know when a pane needs you. Codex turns count when a working pane goes quiet.
  • Going from level n to n+1 takes 100 ร— n1.5 XP, rounded. The top level is 99.
  • โšก Momentum is battle fuel: each fight costs 10. It keeps earning after the daily XP limit, holds up to 200, and gets +10 at the start of a day when you're under 30.
  • โ˜˜ Inspiration rerolls a failed roll in battle.

Get commit boxes for merged pull requests

Griddler checks Azure DevOps every 5 minutes for pull requests you created that have merged. Each one pays once.

  • It needs the Azure CLI installed and signed in. Doctor shows whether it's ready.
  • It matches you by your River Logic account when you're signed in, or by your global git email when you're not. To use another address, see Keys with no control.
  • The first check only notes where you are. Pull requests merged before it don't pay.

Open boxes and wear gear

On Your character, click ๐Ÿ“ฆ Open box (N). Boxes open oldest first.

Equip gear

You have six slots: weapon, helm, chest, greaves, accessory 1 and accessory 2. Click equip on an item to put it on; โœ• on a slot takes it off. The โ–ฒ upgrades filter shows only items better than what you're wearing. Uncommon and better items carry a โ˜… power you can use once per fight; some armour has โ—† plating that cuts damage taken.

Spend skill points

You get one skill point per level from level 2. The โœฆ Skills grid has three branches (body, power, grace), and each step needs the one above it. The top of each branch unlocks a special move, and your class's signature move unlocks at level 5.

Change class or respec

A ๐Ÿ”ฎ Rebirth token changes your class and gives back every skill point. Click ๐Ÿ”ฎ Rebirth ยท 1 token, pick a class (or keep yours), then click Save look. You get a token each level-up, or buy one.

๐Ÿ“– Glossary on the sheet explains every stat, roll and power, and shows what a change would do to your own numbers before you make it.

Spend gold in the Tavern

The shop needs sign-in. Click ๐Ÿบ in the top bar to open ๐Ÿบ The Tavern.

Gold comes from battles (1 per kill, up to 30 a fight, plus 10 for a win), treasure and story rolls on the map, and selling gear. Signed out, the only thing to buy is a Momentum surge from the battle map.

Play music while you work

Turn on Settingsโ†’Play & musicโ†’YouTube Music controls. The assistant ring gains ๐ŸŽต Music. Until you turn it on, nothing loads: no player, no page, no cookie.

ControlWhat it does
YouTube Music / VirefallPicks the player. Switching stops the music and restarts the player.
โฎ โ–ถ โญPrevious, play or pause, next. The track, artist and time show above them; Not playing until something plays.
โ‡ฑ WindowOpens the player in its own window, where you pick music and sign in. โ‡ค Hide window puts it away.
  • YouTube Music needs your Google account. Sign in once inside the player window; Griddler keeps you signed in. Virefall needs no sign-in.
  • The music keeps playing when you close the panel. Turning the setting off closes the player.

Turning it down

There is no off switch. XP and boxes pile up in the background whether you look at them or not, and the XP chip stays in the tab row. Nothing else happens until you open it.
